Welcome the Stranger

I was an immigrant and you welcomed me

Catholic sisters in the St. Louis area stand in solidarity with our immigrant and refugee brothers and sisters.

Rooted in the gospel call to welcome the stranger, we call for comprehensive immigration reform rooted in justice and compassion—not in deportation—that provides a reasonable path to citizenship for undocumented persons. Our call is rooted in our Catholic tradition, which upholds the sacred dignity of every human being. We also recognize our nation’s immigrant heritage, shaped by the invaluable contributions of generations of immigrants and migrants.

Today, we witness the violation of human rights under our current immigration policies—particularly in the separation of families due to unjust deportations and in the exploitation of immigrant workers. We are deeply grieved by the violence done to families through immigration raids and detentions. We cannot in good conscience ignore such suffering and injustice.

You shall not oppress or afflict a resident alien, for you were once aliens, residing in the land of Egypt.  You shall not wrong any widow or orphan.  If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely listen to their cry.

Exodus 22:20-22

In expression of our solidarity with our immigrant and refugee neighbors, our sisters advocate, work and pray for immigration justice. Follow the work of our sisters and learn more about how you can welcome the stranger at our @stlcatholicsisters YouTubeInstagram and Facebook accounts.
